Injuries to the head and brain are often quite serious even when they are considered to be “minor” injuries. Even injuries such as concussions can have long-lasting effects that are prevalent throughout a lifetime. Because of their nature, these injuries are important to take seriously, due to their connection with lasting disabilities and even death. Some of these injuries can go undetected for long periods of time without the victim even knowing that there was an injury present. Brain bleeds and aneurysms can often lie dormant until it’s too late. When these injuries do occur, there are several parties that may be responsible.
- Defective products
- Auto accidents/airbag malfunctions
- Work injuries
- Medical malpractice
- Assault cases
This list is not exhaustive by any means, but gives an idea of the wide range of times and places that these injuries can occur. TBI (traumatic brain injury) is one of the major head injuries that can occur. This is when any blow to the head or even penetrating injury occurs disrupting the normal function of the brain. These cases are marked anywhere from mild to severe, and are a very serious public health concern. A study done by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) between 2002 and 2006 showed that these injuries were the cause of 52,000 deaths, 275,000 hospitalizations, and 1,365,000 emergency room visits. These stats do not include those who never come in for any type of medical treatment. Sometimes people write of symptoms as simply headaches or do not want to take trips to the hospital. TBI is responsible for 30.5% of all injury-related deaths in the United States.
Falls and automobile related injuries and deaths are the highest causes of these injuries. When you are a victim of these injuries especially in a slip and fall case or an automobile injury case, it is important to hold the responsible party accountable. Often times the most susceptible are children aged 0-4 and adults 75 and older due to the fragility of their bones (including the skull). Throughout the study conducted by the CDC, the numbers increased from 2002-2006 steadily, showing a rise in these injuries. While we are not sure the cause, it is believed that either products and services are not as safe and possibly these injuries had been missed more often by doctors. There are medical cases in which a serious head injury may be missed by a doctor or downplayed, and they must be held responsible for thes oversights.
These cases require research and knowledge of the law as well as medical information. It is important that if you or someone you know finds themselves with a serious head injury, that they contact Logue Law Group at 844.PITT.DUI so that we can help them to receive the proper compensation for their injuries.
